Some Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have time to hold a job or can I be a parent while completing the program?

Most students can manage a part-time job. Many of our students have successfully juggled children and studies.  However, the Shiatsu Therapy Diploma program does require commitment - not only are you in classes all day long but you also need time to study and practice.  If in doubt, you may want to consider our part-time study option.

How important is my physical health? Do I need to be strong?

Good health is important but great physical strength is not. Most students find that their health improves over the course of the program as they receive treatments, learn how to take care of themselves and how to apply shiatsu effectively.

Are there other programs like this? Could I study in Japan?

The Shiatsu Diploma program is designed to be comparable to the training a student would receive if they studied in Japan. But, in order to study in Japan, you need to be fluent in Japanese.

What are the main challenges that students run into?

Adjusting to being in school again, learning to study effectively, financial difficulties, and managing one's time so that school and personal lives are each served seem to be the most common challenges.

How difficult is the program compared to high school or university?

Academically, the Western science courses (anatomy, physiology, and pathology) have been designed by the school to be midway in difficulty between high school and university. Students find the program to be challenging, not only academically, but also emotionally.

Is there an association for therapists?

The school has an active SSC Alumni Guild association for its own Shiatsu Therapy Diploma program graduates. Benefits include a newsletter, client and speaker referrals, seminars and job listings.

The Shiatsu Therapy Association of Ontario (S.T.A.O.) is another association for therapists. Active members (Shiatsu Therapy Diploma graduates) may use the association-registered trademark CST (Certified Shiatsu Therapist).

Contact the S.T.A.O. at:
