What
is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicinal Herbology is one of the main branches of
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) internal medicine. Based
on the theories and diagnostic methods of Chinese medicine, the use of medicinal
substances is employed in the treatment of numerous conditions as well as a
regimen of health maintenance. Utilizing the standard
Traditional Chinese Medicine model of health, disharmony and disease, medicinals
are employed based on standard TCM diagnostic methodologies. The
use of medicinals allows for a broader clinical application of medical/disease
conditions treated and broadens the therapeutic effectiveness of treatment when
utilized therapeutically. Medicinals are employed to assist
the body in returning to a state of balance and harmony reflected as one of a
state of health.
Why Study Chinese Herbal
Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine can trace its roots back several millennia
as a system of healing that is both a literary as well as an oral tradition rich
in time-tested knowledge gathered through observation as well as empirical
experience. The entirety of this collective of information is
one of richness, possibility and potential for integration into the health care
needs of these modern times - drawing on the collective information of TCM
through time.
TCM is based on the fundamental assumption that the
phenomena of the natural world is deeply related and in turn related to our
lives today. The perspectives of TCM and allopathic medicine
are fundamentally different but may also be complementary paradigms.
Through a systematic study, deriving from the collected classical
literature and experiences of TCM herbology one systematically gathers, learns
and integrates information deriving from all aspects of this collective core
body of knowledge. Didactic study, empirical learning,
clinical experience and integration of this information will allow for the
understanding and practical system into the health care needs of modern society.
